What is Leverage? Advanced

Leverage means holding a position larger than the money you actually put up, with the difference effectively borrowed. It multiplies the result of a price move in both directions. A gain is magnified, and so is a loss, which is why a levered position can be wiped out entirely by a move that an unlevered holder would barely notice.

The mechanics vary by venue. You might post collateral in a margin account, open a perpetual futures contract, or borrow against assets in an on-chain lending market. What they share is a ratio between the size of your exposure and the money backing it. If a position is several times the size of your collateral, every percentage point the market moves is felt several times over in your balance.

That arithmetic runs in both directions, and this is the half that gets skipped in enthusiastic explanations. Losses are amplified by exactly the same factor as gains. There is no configuration of leverage that magnifies only the outcome you wanted. A move against you that would be a mild disappointment for an unlevered holder can consume your entire stake, and the higher the multiple, the smaller the move needed to do it.

Before your losses can exceed the collateral standing behind them, the venue closes the position. That is liquidation: automatic, fast, and executed at whatever price the order book can actually fill. You do not get to wait for a recovery. Crypto markets are volatile and can turn thin at exactly the wrong moment, so a brief spike through your liquidation price can end a position that a calmer market would have left standing. Being right about direction offers no protection against being liquidated on the way there.

Costs stack on top. Borrowing interest, funding payments on perpetuals and trading fees are charged whether or not the trade works, so a levered position that goes nowhere still bleeds. This entry describes how the tool behaves; it is not a suggestion to use it. CoinCrafty does not give financial advice, and our disclaimer says so in full.

Key takeaways

 • Leverage is symmetrical: whatever multiple applies to your gains applies identically to your losses.
 • Liquidation can close a position at the worst possible moment, so surviving a move matters more than predicting it.
 • Funding, interest and fees drain a levered position even when the price does nothing at all.

Leverage — frequently asked questions

Can I lose more than I deposited?

Usually the liquidation engine closes the position before that happens, so losses are capped at your collateral. That cap is still a total loss of what you put up. In violently fast markets a position can close far below its liquidation price, leaving a negative balance the venue may try to recover. Insurance funds and auto-deleveraging mechanisms exist precisely because that gap is real.

Is leverage the same as borrowing money to buy crypto?

They are cousins. Both give you exposure larger than your own capital and both amplify losses. The difference is enforcement: a levered trading position is monitored continuously and closed automatically the moment your collateral looks insufficient, whereas an ordinary loan simply becomes a debt you owe. The automatic closure is what makes leverage fail so abruptly.

This definition is educational and not financial advice. Crypto is volatile and high-risk — always do your own research.
