About BNB

BNB began life as a token issued by a cryptocurrency exchange, sold to fund the business and to give traders a reason to hold it: pay your trading fees in BNB and you pay a reduced rate. That loyalty-points idea has since grown into something broader, because the same company also built blockchains on which BNB is the fuel that pays for every transaction.

Two roles are worth keeping straight. On the exchange, BNB is a discount and access token, opening launch events and tiered perks. On BNB Smart Chain it is <a href="/glossary/gas/">gas</a>. That chain copies <a href="/coins/ethereum/">Ethereum</a>’s virtual machine, so the same contract code and wallets mostly work, but blocks are produced by a comparatively small set of validators chosen through a stake-and-authority scheme — speed and cheap transactions bought at the price of a narrow group of block producers.

Practically, BNB settles fees on the exchange, pays for swaps, lending, gaming and NFT activity on BNB Smart Chain, and is staked to help secure that chain. Its supply is also reduced over time through a programmed burn tied to network activity, which the project frames as long-run tightening rather than a yield. Plenty of people simply hold it as exposure to the exchange’s continued reach.

The honest caveat is concentration. BNB’s usefulness, its burn policy and much of its demand trace back to one company, so it carries corporate and regulatory exposure that a leaderless network does not: choices made in a boardroom, or by regulators in any market where that business operates, land on the token directly. The validator set is small enough to raise governance questions too. The same platform risk applies to leaving coins on the venue itself, which is why our guide to <a href="/toolkit/how-to-move-crypto-off-an-exchange/">moving crypto off an exchange</a> exists.

BNB FAQ

What is BNB actually used for?

Three things, mostly. It pays discounted trading fees and unlocks tiered features on the exchange that issued it. It is the gas token on BNB Smart Chain, so every swap, transfer or contract call there needs a little of it. And it can be staked to validators to help secure that chain in return for rewards. Some holders treat it purely as a market position rather than using it for any of that.

Is BNB the same thing as BNB Smart Chain?

No. BNB is the token; BNB Smart Chain is one of the networks where that token is spent as gas. The two names get blurred because the same organisation is behind both. When someone says they hold BNB, they mean the asset. When they say they are building on BNB Chain, they mean the Ethereum-compatible network the asset fuels.

What is the BNB burn?

The project permanently destroys tokens on a recurring basis, using a formula linked to activity on its chain, until a target supply is reached. Burning removes coins from circulation for good. It is often described as deflationary, but a shrinking supply is only half of any price story — demand is the other half, and a burn on its own guarantees nothing about value.

Do I need BNB to use apps on BNB Smart Chain?

Yes. Like most Ethereum-style networks, every transaction needs the chain’s native token to pay gas, even if you are only moving a stablecoin. A common beginner snag is bridging tokens across and then finding they cannot be moved because there is no BNB in the wallet for fees. Keep a small working balance set aside before you start.

What are the biggest risks with BNB?

Concentration, mainly. The token’s utility, its burn schedule and much of its liquidity depend on one company, so business, legal and regulatory pressure anywhere that company operates can hit the asset in a way that does not apply to networks with no owner. Add a small validator set, ordinary crypto volatility, and the risk of leaving balances in custody on the exchange itself.

Can I hold BNB in my own wallet?

Yes. BNB on BNB Smart Chain works with the same self-custody wallets used for Ethereum, and major hardware devices support it. Withdrawing to a wallet you control removes exchange custody risk, but hands you full responsibility for your recovery phrase. If that is new to you, start with our walkthroughs on setting up a hardware wallet and backing up a seed phrase.
