About Monero

Most blockchains are public in a way people underestimate. Send someone bitcoin and you hand them a permanent link to your address, your balance and everything you have ever done with it. Monero was built to close that gap. It is a payments-focused cryptocurrency where privacy is the default rather than an option you switch on, so the sender, the receiver and the amount are all hidden from anyone reading the chain.

Three mechanisms do the work together. Ring signatures mix a real spend with decoys, so an observer cannot tell which input was actually spent. Stealth addresses generate a fresh one-time destination for every payment, so nothing accumulates against a public address. And confidential transactions conceal the amount while still letting the network verify that nothing was created out of thin air. Monero also uses a proof of work algorithm chosen to run well on ordinary processors, which keeps mining accessible to individuals rather than concentrating it in specialised hardware, and its block size adjusts to demand rather than being fixed.

What it is used for follows from the design: private payments, donations where the recipient would rather not publish a running total, and merchant sales where neither side wants a permanent public record. Because every transaction is shielded, coins do not carry a traceable history, which some users value as a form of fungibility — one unit is as good as another. Holding it yourself means learning the usual self-custody habits, and our seed phrase backup guide applies here as much as anywhere.

The trade-offs are significant. Privacy features attract regulatory attention, and exchanges in some jurisdictions have removed privacy assets rather than take on the compliance burden — policies differ by venue and change, so check before assuming you can trade or withdraw somewhere. That can affect liquidity and how easily you convert to cash. The cryptography is also harder to audit than a transparent ledger, privacy is a moving target as analysis techniques improve, and no coin makes anyone anonymous by itself. See KYC for the compliance side.

Monero FAQ

How is Monero different from Bitcoin?

Bitcoin's ledger is fully transparent: anyone can look up an address and trace its entire history. Monero hides sender, receiver and amount by default, so the public chain shows that valid transactions occurred without revealing who or how much. The two also differ in mining: Monero deliberately favours ordinary computer processors, while Bitcoin mining is dominated by purpose-built machines.

Does using Monero make me anonymous?

No. It hides what is written to the blockchain, which is a lot, but it cannot protect you from everything else. Your internet connection, the exchange where you bought the coins, the identity checks you passed there, and how you spend them can all link activity back to you. Privacy is a practice, not a property of one asset.

Why do some exchanges stop listing privacy coins?

Chiefly compliance cost and regulatory uncertainty. Exchanges are usually required to monitor transactions and report suspicious activity, and a shielded chain makes the standard analysis tools far less useful. Some venues decide the risk is not worth it and remove such assets; others continue to list them. Rules and policies vary by jurisdiction and change, so verify a specific exchange's current position yourself.

Can Monero be mined at home?

More realistically than most coins, yes. Its proof of work algorithm was chosen to run efficiently on ordinary computer processors and to resist the specialised hardware that dominates other networks, which keeps home mining and pool participation viable. Whether it is worthwhile depends on your electricity price and hardware, so work the numbers out for yourself before committing.

What wallet should I use?

Monero has its own chain and its own wallets, including an official desktop client, mobile options and support on some hardware wallets. It does not live on Ethereum, so an Ethereum address will not work. Whichever you choose, back up the recovery phrase offline and test that you can restore from it before you store anything meaningful.

What risks come with holding XMR?

Alongside the usual crypto volatility, the practical risks are about access and liquidity: fewer venues may list it in your jurisdiction, converting to cash can be harder, and rules could change. Self-custody also puts recovery entirely on you. And because transactions cannot be traced or reversed, a payment sent to the wrong address or lost to a scam is gone for good.
