Bitcoin-only holders who want to sign transactions without ever connecting the device to a computer, and who are comfortable reading documentation. Not a sensible first hardware wallet.

Security model

The Mk4 is designed around the assumption that the computer you use is compromised. It supports a fully air-gapped workflow in which unsigned transactions travel to the device on a microSD card and signed transactions travel back the same way, so the device need never be connected to a host at all. It uses dual secure elements from different vendors, so a break in one does not by itself expose the secret, and it offers duress and brick PINs for physical-coercion scenarios. Firmware source is published under a source-available licence rather than a conventional open-source one, which matters to some readers.

Setup difficulty

Frequently asked questions

What does air-gapped actually mean here?

The device never connects to your computer. An unsigned transaction is written to a microSD card, carried to the device, signed there, and carried back. Malware on the computer therefore has no channel to the keys at all.

Is Bitcoin-only a drawback?

Only if you hold other assets. For a Bitcoin-only holder it is a feature: a narrower codebase means a smaller attack surface and fewer things to go wrong.

Should this be my first hardware wallet?

We would not suggest so. The workflow rewards patience and documentation-reading, and a beginner is better served learning self-custody on something more forgiving first.
