Security model
Jade is fully open-source in both hardware and firmware, which is unusual and genuinely valuable. Rather than a dedicated secure element, it uses what Blockstream describes as a virtual secure element: the secret is protected using a combination of on-device data and a server-held component, so an attacker with physical possession of the device alone does not have everything needed. Readers should understand this as a different trade-off rather than a straight substitute, and Blockstream documents an offline mode for those who prefer not to involve the remote component. The camera enables an air-gapped QR-code signing workflow.

Is a virtual secure element as good as a real one?
It is a different trade-off. A dedicated secure element resists physical extraction on its own; the virtual approach splits the secret so possession of the device alone is not enough. Which you prefer depends on whether your main concern is physical theft or reliance on a remote component.
Can I use it completely offline?
Blockstream documents an offline mode, and the camera supports air-gapped QR signing. Read their documentation carefully before choosing, because the trade-offs differ between modes.
Is the low price a warning sign?
Not here. It reflects simpler construction and the absence of a certified secure element, not a corner cut on the openness of the code. Cheap and open is a legitimate combination; cheap and unverifiable would not be.
