About Polygon
Ethereum's problem has never been capability; it is room. When the base chain is busy, ordinary transactions become expensive, and that prices out exactly the small, frequent payments blockchains were supposed to be good at. Polygon is one of the longest-running answers to that squeeze: a family of networks that run alongside Ethereum, settle back to it, and let people transact for a tiny fraction of mainnet cost. You will see it listed as <strong>Polygon Ecosystem Token</strong> on data providers, though almost everyone just says Polygon.
The best-known network is a proof-of-stake chain with its own validator set. It is frequently described as a <a href="/glossary/layer-2/">layer 2</a>, but it is more accurate to call the original chain a sidechain: it has its own security rather than inheriting Ethereum's outright, which is a meaningful difference. Newer parts of the family use zero-knowledge proofs to post validity proofs back to Ethereum. POL is the native token — it pays fees, and validators stake it, with the token designed so that one stake can secure several chains in the wider network.
Because it is cheap and uses the same tooling as Ethereum, Polygon became a default home for things that need many small transactions: NFT collections, games, loyalty and payment pilots, and <a href="/category/defi-smart-contracts/">DeFi</a> apps that would be uneconomic on mainnet. The trade-offs follow from the design. Lower fees come with different security assumptions, and moving assets across a bridge means trusting bridge contracts — historically one of the most heavily exploited pieces of crypto infrastructure. Validator sets can be more concentrated than headline decentralisation claims suggest. The token replaced the earlier MATIC ticker, so exchange listings, contract addresses and wallet balances can be confusing during and after migration, and impostor tokens exploit exactly that confusion. Competition among scaling networks is also fierce, and none of them has a guaranteed share of it.

What happened to MATIC?
Polygon's native token was rebranded and migrated to POL, with POL taking on the same fee and staking roles plus a design intended to cover multiple chains in the network. Most exchanges and wallets handled the swap for users. The practical warning is that scam tokens impersonating both tickers exist, so always confirm a contract address through an official source before interacting with it.
Is Polygon a layer 2 or a sidechain?
It depends which network you mean, and the marketing often blurs it. The original proof-of-stake chain is best understood as a sidechain secured by its own validators, while newer chains in the family use zero-knowledge proofs and have a stronger claim to layer 2 status. If security assumptions matter to you, check which specific network your funds are sitting on.
Why are fees so much lower than on Ethereum?
Because transactions are processed on a separate network with far more capacity and different security guarantees, rather than competing for space in Ethereum blocks. Cheapness is not free: you are accepting a different trust model in exchange. That is a perfectly reasonable trade for a small game purchase and a more considered one for a large, long-term holding.
How do I move assets between Ethereum and Polygon?
Through a bridge, or by withdrawing directly to the Polygon network from an exchange that supports it. Bridges lock assets on one side and issue representations on the other, and that lock-up is a large, attractive target. Use official bridge interfaces, check the URL carefully, and consider moving a small test amount first before sending anything significant.
What is POL used for?
Three things mainly: paying transaction fees on the network, staking by validators who produce and verify blocks, and voting on governance decisions. Delegators can also stake indirectly through a validator. Note that new tokens are issued to fund staking rewards and ecosystem programmes, which dilutes existing holders — a normal design, but one worth understanding.
What are the main risks with Polygon?
Bridge exploits, concentration in the validator set, dependence on continued developer interest, and hard competition from other scaling networks all matter. There is also plain user risk: fake token contracts, phishing bridge sites, and sending funds to the wrong network.
