About Pepe

Some tokens are built to do something. Pepe is not one of them, and it does not pretend otherwise. It is a meme token named after a long-running internet cartoon frog, launched with no product, no company behind it and no roadmap of features to ship. That is the whole proposition: a tradable token attached to a piece of internet culture, whose worth is whatever a market of strangers agrees it is on a given day.

The mechanics are simple. PEPE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, so it is held in ordinary Ethereum wallets and moved with ether paid as gas. The entire supply was created at once rather than mined or staked into existence, and trading happens largely through automated market makers, where the price comes from the balance of tokens in a liquidity pool rather than from an order book. There is no yield, no governance vote and no fee that flows back to holders.

What people genuinely do with it is trade it and talk about it. Meme tokens function as a way to take a position on cultural momentum, and communities form quickly around them on social platforms. A handful of merchants and payment routes accept them, but that is marginal; the honest description is that PEPE is a speculative instrument dressed in a joke, and its holders mostly know that.

So the risks deserve plain language. Value rests on attention rather than cash flow, and attention leaves as fast as it arrives — meme tokens are among the most volatile assets in a market already known for volatility. Ownership can be concentrated, liquidity can thin out when sentiment turns, and copycat contracts using the same name and image are everywhere. Verify the contract address independently, be wary of anything promising guaranteed returns, and see our guide to spotting crypto scams.

Pepe FAQ

What is PEPE actually for?

Nothing, in the functional sense, and that is by design rather than an oversight. It is not a payment network, a governance token or a stake in anything. It exists to be traded and to serve as a badge of membership in an online community. Judging it against projects with products and users misses the point — but so does assuming the absence of a product is harmless.

How is PEPE created or issued?

The supply was minted in one go when the token contract was deployed, then distributed into trading pools and holder wallets. There is no mining, no staking and no ongoing issuance schedule to follow. That means the questions worth asking are about distribution: how concentrated the holdings are, and how much of the supply sits in wallets that could sell into thin liquidity.

What are the biggest risks of holding a meme token?

Total loss is a realistic outcome, not a remote one. Prices are driven by sentiment, so a token can fall sharply and never recover if the community disperses. Liquidity can vanish exactly when you want to sell, large holders can exit ahead of everyone else, and fake tokens impersonating the real one are common. Never commit money you need for anything else.

Do I need ether to move PEPE?

Yes. PEPE lives on Ethereum, and Ethereum charges its gas fees in ether regardless of which token you are sending. If your wallet holds PEPE but no ether, you cannot transfer or swap it until you top up. Keep a small ether balance aside for fees, and remember that fees rise when the network is busy.

How do I avoid buying a fake version?

Impersonation is the single most common way people lose money here. Anyone can deploy a token with the same name and picture, so never trust a ticker in a search box. Get the contract address from a reputable data source or a block explorer listing you have cross-checked, and treat unsolicited links, direct messages and airdropped tokens as hostile by default.

Is it wrong to be interested in meme tokens?

Not at all, and we have no interest in lecturing anyone. Plenty of people buy them knowingly, for the culture and the entertainment, with money they have decided they can lose. The problem is not the token; it is buying one under the impression that it is an investment with fundamentals underneath. Understand which of those you are doing.
