About Optimism
Optimism is not really a rival to Ethereum; it is an extension of it. It is a <a href="/glossary/layer-2/">layer-2</a> network built to make using <a href="/coins/ethereum/">Ethereum</a> cheaper, by doing the work of executing transactions on a faster chain and then posting the results back to Ethereum, which stores the data and acts as the final court of appeal. One point often missed by newcomers: OP is not the gas token. Fees on Optimism are paid in ETH.
The design is what gives it the name. Transactions are assumed valid when they are posted, and a challenge window follows during which anyone can submit a fault proof showing the posted result was wrong. That optimistic assumption is why the network is fast and cheap, and also why moving funds back to Ethereum through the official bridge waits out the challenge period. A sequencer orders incoming transactions and gives near-instant confirmations before batches are compressed and settled on the main chain.
On top of this sit the usual applications — exchanges, lending markets, perpetuals, NFTs, games and consumer apps — most of them familiar Ethereum projects deployed to a cheaper venue. The other half of the story is the codebase itself, which other networks have adopted to launch their own chains that share standards and, increasingly, infrastructure. OP's role is governance: holders vote on protocol parameters, treasury spending and a long-running programme of retroactive funding for public goods work.
Be clear-eyed about the trade-offs. Transaction ordering has depended on a single sequencer, which is a censorship and liveness risk however well behaved the operator is, and upgrade powers held by a small council mean the system is not yet trustless end to end. A <a href="/glossary/governance-token/">governance token</a> carries no automatic claim on network fees, so its value and the network's success are not the same question. Rollups also compete fiercely with each other, and users follow incentives.

Do I need OP tokens to use Optimism?
No. Gas on the network is paid in ETH, so a wallet funded with ETH is all you need to transact, swap or use applications. OP is a governance token: it gives holders a say in protocol decisions and treasury allocation. Plenty of active users never hold any. Buying a governance token is a separate decision from using the network it governs.
Why does withdrawing back to Ethereum take so long?
Because of the optimistic model. Results posted from the layer-2 are treated as correct unless challenged, so there is a dispute window during which anyone can prove a posted state wrong. Official withdrawals wait for that window to close before releasing funds on Ethereum. Third-party bridges offer instant exits by fronting you the money for a fee, which trades the delay for counterparty risk.
What is a sequencer and why does it matter?
The sequencer is the component that receives transactions, decides their order and gives you a fast confirmation before anything reaches Ethereum. It is the reason the network feels instant. It is also a concentration point: whoever runs it could in principle reorder or delay transactions, and if it stops, the network stalls. Escape hatches that let users submit directly through Ethereum exist for that reason.
Is Optimism as safe as Ethereum itself?
It inherits a lot from Ethereum, since transaction data is published there and disputes are settled there, but it is not identical. You are additionally trusting the bridge contracts holding deposited funds, the correctness of the proof system, and the group holding upgrade keys. Treat it as strong but distinct security, and keep in mind that any bridged asset carries the bridge's risk as well.
What does the OP token actually control?
Voting on protocol parameters, upgrades, treasury spending and grant programmes, through a governance structure that deliberately splits power between token holders and a separate body focused on non-financial contribution. A recurring theme is retroactive funding, where work that already proved useful is rewarded after the fact rather than promised in advance. Governance participation is optional, and most holders do not vote.
How do fees on Optimism compare with Ethereum?
They are substantially lower, because many transactions are batched and compressed before being posted to Ethereum, spreading the expensive part across everyone in the batch. The saving is not fixed though: it still moves with Ethereum's own congestion, since that is where the data lands. Check what a transaction will cost at the moment you send it rather than assuming an old estimate still holds.
