About Aptos
Sometimes a technology outlives the company that commissioned it. Aptos is built around a programming language called Move, which was originally designed for Diem, the payments network Meta worked on and eventually wound down. When that effort ended the engineering ideas did not, and Aptos is one of the public, permissionless chains carrying them forward.
Two design choices define it. The first is Move, which treats coins and NFTs as resources living in your account that cannot be silently copied or destroyed — a stricter model than the balance-inside-a-contract approach most chains inherited, and one intended to remove whole classes of <a href="/glossary/smart-contract/">smart contract</a> bug. The second is parallel execution: instead of processing transactions strictly one after another, the chain identifies those touching unrelated state and runs them at the same time. Consensus is Byzantine-fault-tolerant <a href="/glossary/proof-of-stake/">proof of stake</a>.
APT pays transaction fees, is staked to validators to help secure the network and earn rewards, and carries voting weight in on-chain governance. Day to day, activity looks like most young <a href="/glossary/layer-1/">layer 1</a> networks: trading venues, lending markets, liquid staking, NFTs and games, with wallets and bridges linking it to the rest of the market.
The fair criticisms are straightforward. A large share of tokens went to the team, early backers and the foundation, and scheduled unlocks add persistent supply that no amount of engineering addresses. Headline capacity claims come from tests rather than sustained real demand, and comparing benchmark numbers between chains rarely tells you much. What is the Move language and why does it matter?
Move is the programming language Aptos contracts are written in. Its distinguishing idea is that digital assets are treated as resources with strict ownership rules enforced by the language itself: they cannot be duplicated or accidentally discarded. That closes off some common categories of smart contract bug by construction, rather than relying on developers to remember every check. It also means Ethereum contracts cannot simply be copied across.
What is APT used for?
It pays network fees for every transaction, it is staked to validators to secure the chain and earn rewards, and it grants a vote in on-chain governance proposals. Applications on the network also use it as a base trading and collateral asset. If you plan to do anything on Aptos, you need a working balance for fees before you can move any other token.
How is Aptos related to Meta's Diem project?
Indirectly but genuinely. The Move language and several of the core technical ideas were developed for Diem, the blockchain payments effort Meta pursued and eventually shut down. Aptos is an independent, public network that took those ideas forward. It is not a Meta product, is not operated by Meta, and has no corporate connection to it — the shared inheritance is technical.
Can I stake APT?
Yes. APT can be delegated to a validator, which secures the network in return for a share of rewards, and there are liquid staking options that give you a tradable receipt token in the meantime. Rewards are not guaranteed income: they vary, validators can be penalised for misbehaviour or downtime, and liquid staking adds an extra layer of smart contract risk.
What are the main risks with Aptos?
Token supply is the big one: a large portion was allocated to insiders and unlocks on a schedule, which can weigh on the market regardless of how the technology performs. Beyond that, the chain competes with several other fast networks for the same developers and users, its validator set is relatively concentrated, and the Move ecosystem is young, so contracts have had less time under adversarial scrutiny.
How do I store APT safely?
Use a wallet that supports Aptos accounts and, for anything you would be upset to lose, pair it with a hardware device so signing keys never touch an internet-connected computer. Back up the recovery phrase offline and never type it into a website. Bridging assets in from other chains introduces separate risk, since bridges have historically been among the most attacked pieces of crypto infrastructure.
