Fortalezas · vientos a favor
- Live price, market cap and supply all resolve cleanly from source data.
Riesgos · vientos en contra
- Annualised volatility of 82% — large day-to-day swings.
- Price is below the 50-day average, which sits below the 200-day — a classic downtrend alignment.

Acerca de Sei
Sei is a <a href="/glossary/layer-1/">layer 1</a> blockchain built around a fairly narrow ambition: make trading applications feel less like blockchain applications. Order-driven markets are demanding in a way that ordinary transfers are not — quotes change constantly, cancellations must land quickly, and a few seconds of delay turns a fair price into a stale one. Sei's design starts from those requirements rather than treating them as something to bolt on afterwards.
The chain uses a Cosmos-style stack with byzantine fault tolerant consensus, where a set of validators takes turns proposing blocks and votes to finalise them. Its distinguishing engineering choice is parallel execution: transactions that touch unrelated parts of the chain's state are processed at the same time instead of one after another, which keeps throughput up when many users are doing different things at once. Sei also added Ethereum virtual machine compatibility, so contracts and tooling written for Ethereum can run on it.
SEI, the native token, does the usual three jobs. It pays transaction fees, it is staked by validators and delegated to them by holders who want a share of rewards — the mechanics are covered in our <a href="/learn/mining-vs-staking-explained/">mining versus staking guide</a> — and it carries governance votes on protocol changes. In practice the ecosystem centres on exchanges, trading tools, and a growing set of games and consumer apps.
The candid assessment is that Sei is a newer chain competing in the most crowded category in crypto, where several networks make broadly similar speed claims. Benchmarks quoted by any project are produced under conditions the project chose; sustained behaviour under real, adversarial load is what actually counts, and that takes years to demonstrate. Validator sets on young chains tend to be concentrated, much early activity is driven by incentive programmes rather than durable demand, and scheduled token unlocks add supply that existing holders absorb. <a href="/glossary/staking/">Staking</a> also involves lock-up periods during which you cannot sell.

Sei Preguntas frecuentes
What kind of blockchain is Sei?
A standalone proof-of-stake layer 1 rather than a network built on top of Ethereum. It has its own validators, its own security and its own token for fees, and it settles its own transactions. It does support Ethereum-style smart contracts, which makes it feel familiar to developers, but it does not inherit Ethereum's security the way a rollup does.
Can I use an Ethereum wallet with Sei?
Largely yes, thanks to its Ethereum virtual machine compatibility, but there is a wrinkle: the network exposes both a Cosmos-style address and an Ethereum-style one. Exchanges and apps may expect different formats, and getting it wrong can strand a transfer. Check which format the receiving side asks for, and send a small test amount the first time.
What is SEI used for?
Paying network fees, staking to help secure the chain, and voting in governance. Delegating to a validator lets you earn a share of staking rewards without running infrastructure yourself, though you take on the validator's performance and slashing risk. The token is not a claim on any company or on the revenues of applications built on the network.
Is staking SEI safe?
It carries real risks. Your tokens are locked for an unbonding period, so you cannot sell during a sharp fall; a misbehaving or offline validator can cost you part of your stake through slashing; and rewards are paid in a token whose price can drop by more than the reward is worth. Spread delegation across reputable validators rather than chasing the highest advertised yield.
Are the speed claims worth much?
Treat them as design goals, not guarantees. Throughput and finality figures are usually measured on controlled networks with cooperative traffic, and the interesting question is what happens under congestion, during a popular launch, or when someone is actively trying to break things. Judge a chain on how it behaves during its worst days, not its best benchmarks.
What are the main risks of a newer layer 1?
Concentration among a small validator set, code that has had less time to be attacked and hardened, ecosystems propped up by temporary incentives, and continuing token unlocks that add supply. On top of that, dozens of chains are chasing the same developers and users, and most historically have not held their position. None of this is unique to Sei, but all of it applies.
