Acerca de Polkadot
Polkadot starts from a contrarian idea: no single blockchain should try to be good at everything. Instead of one chain where a game, a bank and a social app all compete for the same block space, Polkadot hosts many specialised chains that share one pool of security and can send messages to each other. DOT is the token that ties that arrangement together.
At the centre is a coordinating chain that handles agreement and finality for everyone connected to it. Security comes from nominated <a href="/glossary/proof-of-stake/">proof of stake</a>: validators bond DOT to take part, ordinary holders nominate the validators they trust and share in the rewards, and anyone caught misbehaving has part of their stake destroyed. Connected chains buy access to that shared security rather than recruiting their own validator set, and the way that access is sold has been reworked over the network's life, moving from long leases won at auction towards more flexible, shorter purchases of blockspace.
The token does three jobs. It is staked, it pays for access to the network, and it votes. Polkadot leans unusually hard on on-chain governance: token holders decide protocol upgrades directly, and a treasury funded by the network pays for development, tooling and events through public proposals. Upgrades can be enacted without the messy hard forks other chains rely on, which is a genuine engineering achievement. If staking is new to you, <a href="/learn/mining-vs-staking-explained/">mining versus staking explained</a> covers the basics first.
The criticisms deserve a hearing. Voting weight follows tokens, so large holders and organised groups carry the day and turnout is often thin — a familiar weakness of <a href="/glossary/governance-token/">governance tokens</a>. Rewards for stakers come from new issuance, so simply holding DOT without staking dilutes you. The architecture is genuinely complex to build on and to explain, and repeated changes to the blockspace model have forced teams to replan. Competition from other <a href="/glossary/layer-1/">layer-1</a> chains and from rollups on Ethereum is intense, and shared security only matters if enough worthwhile chains want it.

Polkadot Preguntas frecuentes
What is a parachain, in plain English?
A separate blockchain with its own rules, its own block times and often its own token, which plugs into Polkadot's central chain and borrows its security instead of recruiting validators from scratch. Think of a shopping centre: each shop fits out its own space however it likes, but they all share the roof, the plumbing and the security guards rather than each building a stand-alone shop.
What does staking DOT actually involve?
You nominate validators you believe will behave and stay online, and your tokens back them. In return you share the rewards they earn. Your tokens are locked while bonded and take time to unbond, so the money is not instantly available. If a validator you backed is slashed for misbehaviour, a portion of your stake can be destroyed too — nomination is not a risk-free deposit.
Can I lose money by staking?
Yes, in two ways. Slashing can take part of your bonded stake if a validator you nominated double-signs or goes badly wrong, so spreading nominations matters. And the reward is paid in DOT, so a falling token price can easily outweigh anything you earn. Staking changes your risk profile; it does not remove risk, and it should never be described as interest.
What is the treasury and who controls it?
The network sets aside funds that anyone can request through a public proposal — for building tools, running events, marketing, audits and so on. Token holders vote on whether to release the money. It funds real work, but it also draws opportunists, so the quality of spending depends entirely on how carefully holders scrutinise proposals rather than rubber-stamping them.
How is Polkadot different from Kusama?
Kusama is a separate network built from broadly the same code and used as a fast-moving proving ground. Changes tend to land there first, with shorter timelines and a higher tolerance for things breaking. It is not a testnet — the tokens have real value and mistakes cost real money — but it exists so that Polkadot itself can move more cautiously.
Where should I store DOT?
Off an exchange if you plan to hold it, using a wallet that supports the network, ideally paired with a hardware device so the keys never touch an internet-connected machine. Staking can usually be done from that setup rather than by handing tokens to a custodian. Be careful with fake staking sites and 'support' accounts offering to help you bond — that is a common scam pattern.
