Stellar was built for a narrower job than most blockchains: moving money between currencies and across borders, cheaply and quickly. Where a general-purpose chain tries to be a world computer, Stellar behaves more like plumbing for payments. Institutions and fintech companies can issue tokenised versions of pounds, dollars or any other asset on it, and the network handles the transfer and the currency conversion in between. Lumens (XLM) are the network's native asset, used for fees and account reserves.
It does not use mining or staking. Instead it runs a federated agreement model, where each participant chooses which other nodes it trusts and <a href="/glossary/consensus/">consensus</a> emerges from the overlap between those choices. Transactions settle in seconds and fees are deliberately tiny — small enough that spam is discouraged without pricing out a modest remittance. Two other pieces matter: an order book and path-payment system built directly into the protocol, which can route a payment through several assets automatically, and support for issuing assets natively rather than through contracts.
The clearest real use is cross-border payments and <a href="/glossary/stablecoin/">stablecoin</a> settlement. Money-transfer operators and financial institutions plug in as "anchors", taking deposits in local currency and issuing a matching token that can be sent onward and redeemed at the other end. Aid disbursement and remittance corridors have been recurring themes, and Stellar has since added smart contract support to broaden what can be built on it.
The honest caveats: a payment network is only as useful as the anchors and partners connected to it, so adoption, not technology, is the binding constraint. Redeeming an issued asset means trusting its issuer, which is a credit decision rather than a blockchain one. The consensus model relies on a set of trusted validators, which critics see as less open than proof of work or stake. What are lumens actually used for?
Three things, mainly. They pay the small fee attached to every transaction, they satisfy a minimum balance each account must keep to exist on the ledger, and they can act as a bridge asset when a payment routes between two currencies with no direct market. Ordinary users mostly encounter lumens as the little balance they need to keep for the network to work.
How is Stellar different from XRP?
Both aim at cross-border payments and both settle quickly with negligible fees, and the two share some early history. The differences are in governance, consensus design and ecosystem: they run separate networks with separate validator arrangements, separate asset issuance models and different institutional partners. Neither is a version of the other, and their tokens are unrelated.
What is an anchor?
An anchor is an institution that connects the network to the traditional financial system. It takes deposits in a local currency and issues a matching token on Stellar, then redeems that token for cash when someone cashes out. Anchors are what make the network usable for real remittances — and they are also where the trust sits, because your token is a claim on that specific issuer.
Is Stellar mined?
No. There is no mining and no staking rewards, so lumens cannot be earned by running hardware. New accounts are funded by acquiring lumens on an exchange or receiving them from someone else. Validators run the software to support the network rather than to collect a block reward, which is a meaningful difference from proof of work chains.
What risks should I understand before holding XLM?
The token is volatile like any crypto asset, and its value depends heavily on whether payment adoption materialises. If you hold tokenised assets rather than lumens themselves, you are also exposed to the issuer's solvency and policies, including the possibility that a balance is frozen. And because accounts must hold a minimum reserve, sending your entire balance away is not possible — a common source of confusion.
Can I hold lumens in my own wallet?
Yes. Several wallets support Stellar, including hardware wallets, and self-custody works the same way as elsewhere: the recovery phrase is the only route back if a device is lost. One quirk to watch is the memo field. Many exchanges use a shared deposit address and identify your account by memo, so sending without one can mean a slow, manual recovery process.
