Acerca de Ethereum Classic

Ethereum Classic is what happens when a community cannot agree on whether a blockchain should ever be rewritten. After a prominent early smart contract was drained by an attacker, most of the Ethereum community chose to change the chain's history to undo the theft. A minority refused, arguing that immutability was the whole point and that <em>code is law</em> — if the contract did what it was written to do, the outcome had to stand. The chain they kept running is Ethereum Classic.

Mechanically, ETC is the continuation of the original chain, and the two networks share ancestry up to the split. Both were <a href="/glossary/fork/">forks</a> in the strict sense; which one counts as the continuation is partly a philosophical question and partly a matter of where the users went. The important technical difference today is consensus: Ethereum moved to proof of stake, while Ethereum Classic stayed with <a href="/glossary/proof-of-work/">proof of work</a>, so blocks are still produced by miners spending electricity. Classic also adopted a capped issuance schedule that steps down at fixed intervals, giving it a hard supply ceiling the original chain never had.

In practice the network runs the same style of contracts and the same address format as <a href="/coins/ethereum/">Ethereum</a>, so tooling ports across easily. Its actual roles are narrower: a home for miners who prefer proof-of-work chains, a long-term holding for people who value the immutability position, and a small ecosystem of applications. Developer activity and liquidity are considerably thinner than on the chain it split from.

The honest counterargument to <em>code is law</em> is that a rule nobody can override also protects thieves, and that a network is a social system as much as a technical one. The bigger practical risk is structural: smaller proof-of-work chains are more exposed to a <a href="/glossary/51-percent-attack/">51% attack</a>, because an attacker needs only to out-spend a modest amount of honest hash power, and rentable hash power makes that easier. Exchanges often respond with long confirmation requirements. Thin ecosystems also struggle to attract the builders that make a smart contract platform worth using.

Ethereum Classic Preguntas frecuentes

Is Ethereum Classic just an old copy of Ethereum?

Not a copy — a continuation. Both chains share the same history up to the split, after which they diverged and have been developed separately ever since. Ethereum Classic has its own developers, its own upgrade path, its own monetary policy and its own consensus mechanism. It is a distinct network that happens to share a common ancestor with a much larger one.

Why does ETC still use mining?

Because the community that stayed with the chain generally regards proof of work as the more credible security model, and because staying put avoided the upheaval of a consensus change. That choice keeps ETC available to GPU and ASIC miners who lost their home when Ethereum moved to staking. The trade-off is energy use and a much smaller pool of security spending.

Can I use my Ethereum wallet with Ethereum Classic?

Usually yes, because the address format is identical — but that similarity is dangerous. An address that exists on both networks is not the same account balance, and sending ETC to a service that only supports Ethereum, or the reverse, can put the funds permanently out of reach. Always select the correct network explicitly rather than assuming the address is enough.

What is a 51% attack, and why does it come up with ETC?

It is when one party controls enough mining power to reorganise recent blocks and spend the same coins twice. Any proof-of-work chain is vulnerable in principle; smaller ones are more exposed because the cost of assembling that much hash power is lower and can sometimes simply be rented. This is a structural property of chain size, not an accusation about any particular period.

Does ETC have a supply limit?

Yes. Unlike the chain it split from, Ethereum Classic adopted a monetary policy with a hard ceiling on the total number of coins, with the block reward reducing at set intervals until issuance ends. Supporters treat that predictability as a core feature. The live figures on this page will always be more accurate than any number written into an article.

What should I understand before holding ETC?

That you are backing a specific position — that a chain's history should never be altered — alongside a network with a smaller developer base, thinner liquidity and a security budget far below the largest proof-of-work chain. Those are real, permanent trade-offs rather than temporary conditions, and they should be part of the picture before anything else is.
