Acerca de Hedera
Hedera takes a deliberately different route to the same destination as other public networks: getting a group of computers to agree on the order of events without a boss. Where most chains open that job to anyone willing to buy hardware or stake tokens, Hedera hands it to a defined set of operators and optimises hard for predictable costs and fast, final agreement. The result is a network aimed squarely at organisations that want blockchain-style settlement without surprises on the invoice.
The underlying method is not a chain of blocks at all. Nodes gossip transactions to one another, and each message carries a record of what its sender already knew. Because that history is bundled into the gossip itself, every node can work out how the others would have voted on ordering without any votes being sent — the ordering falls out of the shared record. HBAR pays the fees for using the network, which are set in fixed value terms rather than bid up in an auction, and it is also staked to nodes to weight the consensus. If <a href="/glossary/consensus/">consensus</a> mechanisms are new to you, that entry is the place to start.
The network exposes ready-made services rather than expecting everyone to write contracts from scratch: issuing tokens, recording tamper-evident timestamped messages for audit trails and supply-chain records, plus a contract environment compatible with Ethereum tooling. Much of the visible activity comes from institutions — payments experiments, carbon and environmental registries, identity and provenance projects — which is a different adoption pattern from consumer-led chains.
The central criticism is straightforward and fair: the consensus nodes are operated by a council of large organisations serving fixed terms, so users are trusting a known club rather than an open crowd. Supporters call that accountability; critics call it permissioned, and the long-promised opening of node operation to anyone has moved slowly. The software's licensing history, unusually restrictive before it was loosened, still colours the argument about how open the platform is. A large share of supply was created at the outset and releases over a long schedule. And <a href="/glossary/decentralization/">decentralisation</a> is a spectrum, not a badge.

Hedera Preguntas frecuentes
Is Hedera actually a blockchain?
Not in the strict sense. It does not string transactions into blocks chained one after another; it uses a gossip-based structure from which the ordering is derived. Functionally it does what a blockchain does — a shared, ordered, tamper-evident record — so the label gets used loosely. If someone insists on the distinction, they are technically right, and the practical difference for a user is small.
Who runs the network?
A governing council made up of large companies, universities and other institutions, each operating consensus nodes for limited terms so that no single member is permanent. Decisions about the platform are made by that council rather than by token-holder voting. Whether you find that reassuring or troubling is genuinely the crux of the argument about Hedera, and both reactions are defensible.
Why are the fees predictable?
Because they are set in fixed value terms for each type of operation rather than auctioned off to the highest bidder when the network is busy. The amount of HBAR you pay adjusts as its price moves, so the cost in ordinary money stays roughly steady. For businesses that need to budget, that stability is a large part of the appeal.
What does staking HBAR do?
You delegate your holding to a node, which increases the weight that node carries in consensus, and you can receive rewards for doing so. Your tokens are not handed over and you keep control of them. Because node operation is restricted to council members, staking here is closer to expressing support within a fixed set than to the open validator competition on other networks.
What are the main risks?
Governance concentration is the obvious one: a small group makes the decisions, and that is a trust assumption you either accept or you do not. Adoption skews towards institutional pilots, which can be announced enthusiastically and then quietly go nowhere. Long-dated supply releases add ongoing sell pressure. And like any crypto asset it is volatile — nothing here suggests it belongs in your portfolio.
Can I hold HBAR in a normal wallet?
Yes, in wallets that support the network, and the leading hardware wallets cover it. Note that accounts on Hedera work a little differently from an ordinary address — you may need an account to be created and funded before it can receive anything, and some exchanges require a memo field on withdrawals. Send a small test amount first.
