Sobre Solana
Solana is a public blockchain built around one stubborn idea: keep everything on a single chain, and make that chain quick enough that using it feels unremarkable. Rather than pushing activity out to secondary networks, it tries to confirm trades, transfers and mints cheaply on the base layer itself. SOL is the native token — it pays for transactions, it is staked to help secure the network, and it is what validators are rewarded in for doing that work.
The mechanism has two halves. Consensus is <a href="/glossary/proof-of-stake/">proof of stake</a>, so validators put SOL at risk in exchange for the right to produce and confirm blocks. Layered on top is a verifiable clock, Proof of History, which lets the network agree on the order of events without every validator first gossiping about timing. A parallel runtime then executes transactions at the same time whenever they touch different accounts, which is where most of the speed actually comes from.
That combination attracts activity which would feel expensive elsewhere. Order-book exchanges, market-making bots, NFT collections, token launches, payment apps and consumer wallets cluster here because confirmation is quick and fees are small enough that people stop budgeting for them. Staking is popular too, usually by delegating to a validator rather than running one; if you are weighing that against mining, our <a href="/learn/mining-vs-staking-explained/">mining versus staking explainer</a> sets out the difference.
The counterpoints matter just as much. Solana has suffered outages, in which block production stalled and validators had to coordinate a restart — unusual among large chains, and a live reliability question rather than a settled one. Keeping pace with the chain also demands powerful hardware and generous bandwidth, which prices out hobbyist operators and keeps the argument about how <a href="/glossary/decentralization/">decentralised</a> the validator set really is wide open. Stake is concentrated as well, and SOL is volatile.

Solana Perguntas frequentes
Is Solana a layer 1 or a layer 2?
It is a <a href="/glossary/layer-1/">layer 1</a> — its own base chain with its own validators and its own consensus, not a network settling on top of another. That is the whole design argument: where several projects scale by moving activity to a second layer, Solana tries to keep the throughput on the base chain itself. Applications and tokens on Solana therefore live directly on that chain.
What is SOL actually used for?
Three things. It pays transaction fees, so you need a little of it in your wallet before you can move anything else on the network. It is staked, either by running a validator or by delegating to one, which is how the chain is secured and how staking rewards are earned. And it is the account rent and collateral asset that most Solana applications quote prices against.
How does staking SOL work in practice?
Most people delegate rather than run hardware. You choose a validator from inside a wallet, delegate your SOL to it, and keep ownership throughout — the validator never takes custody. Rewards accrue over staking periods, and the validator keeps a commission. Undelegating is not instant: your stake becomes withdrawable at the end of a staking period, so plan for a wait rather than an immediate exit.
Has the Solana network ever stopped working?
Yes, and it is fair to weigh that. The network has experienced outages where block production halted and the validator community had to coordinate a restart, meaning transactions could not be sent during those windows. Engineering work has gone into the causes since, but this is a reliability record you should read about for yourself rather than assume is behind the project.
Do I need a special wallet for SOL?
You need a wallet that supports Solana specifically, because Solana addresses and Ethereum addresses are not interchangeable and sending to the wrong format can lose funds. Several major hardware wallets support the chain, and pairing one with a Solana browser wallet is the usual arrangement for larger balances. Our <a href="/toolkit/how-to-set-up-a-hardware-wallet/">hardware wallet setup guide</a> walks through that pairing.
Why are Solana's fees so much lower than Ethereum's?
Mostly because block space is far less scarce. Solana processes many transactions in parallel on the base chain, so users are not bidding against each other for a small amount of room in each block the way they do on a congested network. Cheap fees are a design choice with costs attached, though: they demand heavier validator hardware and invite spam, which the network has had to manage.
