Sobre Ethereum
Think of Ethereum as a shared computer that no single company owns. Bitcoin showed that a public ledger could move money without a bank; Ethereum generalised the idea so the ledger can also run programs. Those programs are <a href="/glossary/smart-contract/">smart contracts</a> — code published to the network that anyone can call, and that then executes exactly as written. Ether, the network's own asset, is what you spend to make that shared computer do work. Ethereum was co-founded by Vitalik Buterin alongside several others.
The network is secured by proof of stake. Rather than miners racing to solve puzzles, validators lock up ether as a deposit and take turns proposing and attesting to blocks; misbehave badly and part of that deposit is destroyed. Ethereum began life under mining and later moved to staking, which changed how new ether is issued and cut the network's energy use dramatically. Every transaction also pays <a href="/glossary/gas/">gas</a>, a unit measuring computational effort: a plain transfer costs little, a complex contract call costs far more.
Most of what people actually do on Ethereum happens inside contracts rather than plain transfers. Stablecoins settle there, lending markets and decentralised exchanges run there, and shared token standards let anyone issue an asset that every wallet already understands. Because block space is limited, busy periods push fees up, which is why so much activity has moved to <a href="/glossary/layer-2/">layer 2</a> rollups — separate chains that batch transactions and post the results back to Ethereum for settlement. Our <a href="/tools/gas-tracker/">gas tracker</a> shows what the base layer is charging.
The trade-offs are real. Base-layer fees rise with demand and can make small transactions uneconomic. A smart contract is only as safe as its code, and a bug in something you interact with can drain funds with nobody to appeal to. Staking has concentrated a great deal of ether with a handful of large operators, which troubles people who care about decentralisation. Rollups also differ in how much they still rely on the teams running them, so "secured by Ethereum" is a spectrum rather than a guarantee.

Ethereum Perguntas frequentes
What is the difference between Ethereum and ether?
Ethereum is the network — the shared, programmable ledger and the thousands of computers keeping copies of it. Ether (ticker ETH) is the asset that lives on it. You need ether to pay for transactions and contract execution, and validators post ether as the stake that secures the chain. People usually say "Ethereum" for both, but the distinction matters once you start reading technical documentation.
Why do fees change so much?
Ethereum sells a limited amount of block space each block, and the price adjusts to demand. When a popular mint or a volatile market has everyone transacting at once, the same action can cost several times what it did an hour earlier. The cost also depends on what you are doing: a swap through several contracts consumes far more computation than sending ether to a friend.
Do I need to understand rollups to use Ethereum?
Not to get started, but it helps. A rollup is a separate network that processes transactions cheaply and then posts a compressed record back to Ethereum. Wallets treat each rollup as its own network, so funds sent to the wrong one can be awkward or impossible to recover. Before moving anything, check which network an address or exchange deposit page expects.
Is staking ether risk-free income?
No. Staking pays a variable reward for helping secure the network, but it carries real risks: a validator that goes offline or signs conflicting blocks loses part of its deposit, staking services can fail or behave badly, and "liquid staking" tokens are claims on a provider rather than ether itself. The reward is also denominated in ether, so its value in your own currency still moves.
What can go wrong when using a decentralised application?
Mostly things unrelated to Ethereum itself. Contracts can contain bugs, admin keys can be abused, and a convincing copy of a real site can drain a wallet the moment you approve a transaction. Read what you are signing, treat unlimited token approvals with caution, and use a separate wallet for experiments rather than the one holding your savings.
Where should I keep ether?
That depends on how much you have and how often you move it. Leaving it on an exchange means trusting that company with your funds; holding it yourself means the seed phrase becomes the single thing standing between you and a total loss. Many people split the difference: a hot wallet for day-to-day amounts, and a hardware wallet for anything they would hate to lose.
