Über Toncoin
The Open Network started life as a design drawn up by the team behind the Telegram messenger. Telegram later stepped away from the project following a dispute with US regulators, and independent developers picked the code up and carried it forward. Toncoin is the network's native token: it pays transaction fees, backs validators through staking, and buys network services such as readable domain names and file storage.
The chain is built for splitting itself up. A coordinating masterchain tracks a set of workchains, and those can be divided further as load grows, so capacity is meant to come from sharding rather than from making one chain heavier. The knock-on effect matters: contracts on TON talk to each other by sending messages that arrive later, more like email than a phone call. That keeps shards independent, but it means a single user action can play out over several steps.
In practice the network's centre of gravity is the messenger. Mini-applications, bots, tipping, in-chat wallets, games and token launches all live inside a chat window, which is the smoothest onboarding route in crypto and also its own trap. Wallets offered inside an app are often custodial, meaning somebody else holds the keys, so it is worth reading custodial versus non-custodial wallets before treating an in-chat balance as truly yours. Stablecoins issued on TON have made it a payments rail too.
The trade-offs are real. Distribution through one messenger is a huge advantage that is also a dependency, and a policy change there would be felt immediately. Token ownership is widely described as concentrated, which affects both governance and market depth. The asynchronous contract model is unfamiliar to developers arriving from Ethereum and has produced subtle bugs, and the tooling and audit culture around it are younger. Judge it on usage that persists after the incentives stop.

Toncoin FAQ
Is TON run by Telegram?
Not any more. The original design work came from Telegram's team, but the company withdrew after a regulatory dispute and the network was taken over by an independent developer community and foundation. Telegram remains the main distribution channel through wallets and mini-apps inside the messenger, which is a commercial relationship rather than control of the chain. It still means the two are closely tied in practice.
What is Toncoin used for on the network?
It pays gas for transactions and smart contract calls, and it is staked by validators, or delegated to them, to secure the chain and earn rewards. It also pays for on-chain services such as human-readable domain names, decentralised storage and proxying. Inside Telegram it acts as a general-purpose unit for payments, tips and in-app purchases across mini-applications.
Is the wallet inside Telegram the same as a self-custody wallet?
Often not, and the distinction matters. Some in-app wallets are custodial, meaning a company holds the keys and you hold an account with them. Others are genuine self-custody wallets where you control the recovery phrase. Check which you have before storing anything meaningful. If you were never shown a recovery phrase to write down, you almost certainly do not control the keys.
Why do TON transactions sometimes complete in stages?
Because contracts communicate asynchronously. Rather than one call executing everything at once, a transaction can send messages that other contracts process in later blocks. Most of the time this is invisible and fast. Occasionally you will see a swap or transfer settle in steps, or fail partway with the earlier step already done. Wait for the full sequence to finish before assuming an action went wrong.
What are the biggest risks with TON?
Concentration is the headline one: heavy dependence on a single messenger for users, and ownership concentrated among relatively few addresses, which can amplify moves in either direction. Add a younger smart contract ecosystem with less audit history, a large volume of low-quality token launches and airdrop farming inside chat apps, and the ordinary risk that engagement bought with rewards reflects incentives rather than habit.
How do TON addresses and domain names work?
Raw addresses are long strings, but the network supports readable names that resolve to an address, bought and held on-chain like any other asset. They make sending less error-prone, though they introduce their own hazard: a name can be mistyped or impersonated just as a web domain can. Always confirm the resolved address, and send a small test transaction to any new destination first.
