Über Filecoin
Think of Filecoin as an open marketplace for spare disk space. On one side are people and organisations with files that need to survive — datasets, archives, media, the images behind a collection of tokens. On the other are operators with racks of storage sitting idle. Filecoin is the market that matches them and, more importantly, the accounting system that proves the files are still there without anyone having to take an operator's word for it.
That proof is the clever part. A storage provider locks up FIL as collateral when it takes on data, then has to answer cryptographic challenges on a continuing basis, showing it still holds that exact copy rather than a stand-in or a deleted stub. Pass and it earns; fail repeatedly and part of the collateral is destroyed. FIL is what customers pay with, what providers stake, and what the network issues as a reward for adding proven capacity — so the token is wired directly into the honesty of the storage rather than bolted on.
The practical users are the ones with awkward data: scientific and public datasets, archives that must outlive any one company, media referenced by on-chain applications that would be embarrassed by a dead link. A programmable layer added later lets deals and payments be handled by smart contracts, and separate caching and retrieval services have grown up to make fetching files quicker. If the whole category is new to you, start with what crypto and blockchain actually are.
Be clear-eyed about the gaps. This is not a drop-in replacement for a mainstream cloud bucket: retrieval speed, tooling and developer experience remain the weak points, and deals expire and need renewing rather than quietly persisting forever. A great deal of network capacity can be committed without holding anyone's real files, so raw capacity is not a measure of demand. Providers carry hardware costs and collateral in a volatile token, which squeezes them when prices fall. And storing something on a public network permanently is a decision you cannot take back — worth weighing against the checklist in how to evaluate a crypto project.

Filecoin FAQ
Is Filecoin the same as IPFS?
They are related but not the same. IPFS is a way of addressing and moving files by their content rather than their location, and it does not guarantee anyone keeps hosting them. Filecoin adds the missing incentive: paid deals, collateral and repeated proofs that a provider still holds the data. You can use IPFS with no tokens at all; Filecoin is what makes storage someone's paid obligation.
Can anyone read files stored on Filecoin?
Assume yes unless you encrypt first. The network's job is proving data is stored and retrievable, not keeping it confidential, and storage providers hold the bytes. Anything sensitive should be encrypted client-side before it ever leaves your machine, with the keys kept separately. Treat public storage networks the way you would treat a public noticeboard.
What does the FIL token actually do?
Three things. Clients pay it for storage and retrieval deals. Providers lock it as collateral, which they lose if they stop proving they hold the data. And the network issues it as a reward for supplying proven capacity and producing blocks. It is closer to a working input in a storage business than to a share in a company.
Do I need to run hardware to take part?
Not to store files — you simply pay a provider. Becoming a provider is a serious undertaking: enterprise-grade hardware, reliable bandwidth, sealed data preparation and locked collateral, with penalties for downtime. It is an infrastructure business with thin margins and real operational risk, not something to try casually on a spare machine at home.
What are the main risks for a holder?
Demand for decentralised storage has to grow into the capacity that exists, and it competes with very cheap, very reliable mainstream cloud services. Provider economics depend on the token price, which can force capacity offline in a downturn. Token issuance and vesting schedules add ongoing supply. As always, this is a volatile asset and nothing here is advice about buying it.
What happens when a storage deal ends?
Nothing renews itself. A deal covers an agreed period, and when it lapses the provider is no longer obliged to keep your data or prove it holds it. Serious users make deals with several providers at once and automate renewal, often through a service that manages this for them. Treating a single deal as permanent archiving is how files quietly disappear.
