Über Bitcoin Cash
Bitcoin Cash exists because of an argument Bitcoin's community could not settle. As the original network filled up, transactions competed for limited block space and fees climbed. One camp wanted bigger blocks so more payments would fit; the other argued that bigger blocks make running a node harder and quietly centralise the system. When no compromise held, the chain split in a hard fork: Bitcoin Cash carried the big-block position forward, while Bitcoin kept blocks small.
Because it is a fork rather than a fresh design, BCH inherited the ledger up to the moment of the split — everyone holding BTC then held an identical BCH balance — along with proof-of-work mining, the same hashing algorithm and the same halving-based issuance rhythm. The visible difference is capacity: larger blocks leave far more room for transactions, so fees stay low even when the network is busy. Later upgrades added scripting features and on-chain tokens.
The pitch has stayed consistent: money you can actually spend. Small payments, tipping, cross-border remittances and merchant checkout are where Bitcoin Cash is used most, helped by fees that do not spike when demand does. It uses a distinct address format to reduce the chance of sending coins to the wrong chain, and it is supported by mainstream software and hardware wallets — see our hardware wallet walkthrough.
The open questions deserve stating plainly. Bigger blocks do make full nodes heavier to run as history accumulates, which is exactly what the small-block side warned about; how much that matters is still contested rather than resolved. Bitcoin Cash also competes for the same mining hardware as Bitcoin while commanding a far smaller share of it, which lowers the relative cost of a 51% attack. The chain has split again since, and merchant adoption has grown slowly.

Bitcoin Cash FAQ
Is Bitcoin Cash the same thing as Bitcoin?
No. They share history up to the point where the chain split, and much of the same code and mining algorithm, but they have been separate networks with separate ledgers, separate developers and separate prices ever since. Holding one gives you no claim on the other. Treat them as related projects with a common ancestor, not as two versions of one coin.
I held BTC before the fork — do I have BCH?
If you held the keys yourself at the moment of the split, the matching BCH balance exists on the other chain and can generally be claimed with the same private key using compatible wallet software. That process is fiddly and a well-known target for scams, so never paste a seed phrase into a website offering to help. If an exchange held your coins, its own policy decided what happened.
Why did the split happen at all?
It was a disagreement about scaling. One side believed raising the block size was the direct way to keep fees low and payments usable. The other believed larger blocks would make running a full node too costly for ordinary people, concentrating verification in fewer hands, and preferred to add capacity in other layers. Neither position was unreasonable; the fork happened because neither could win a consensus.
What is Bitcoin Cash genuinely good at?
Cheap, quick on-chain payments. Because block space is comparatively plentiful, sending small amounts stays inexpensive even during busy periods, which suits tipping, remittances and point-of-sale use. It also supports on-chain tokens and contract features that some projects build on. It is not trying to be a smart-contract platform, and it has a smaller developer and merchant network than the largest chains.
How is BCH mined, and does that affect safety?
It uses the same proof-of-work algorithm as Bitcoin, so the same machines can mine either chain and switch based on profitability. Because BCH attracts a much smaller share of that hardware, an attacker needs less capacity to threaten it than they would to threaten Bitcoin. That does not mean an attack is happening, but it is a genuine structural difference worth understanding before holding large amounts.
What should I watch out for when storing or sending BCH?
The most common mistake is sending BCH to a Bitcoin address or the reverse. The distinct address format helps, but legacy-format addresses still circulate and modern wallets sometimes accept them silently. Always copy addresses rather than typing them, send a small test amount first, and keep long-term balances on a device where you control the keys and have backed up the seed phrase.
