Über Avalanche
Avalanche starts from a different premise to most smart-contract platforms. Rather than squeezing every application onto a single chain, it expects the network to grow sideways — into many chains that share tooling while keeping their own rules. AVAX is the token holding that together: it pays transaction fees, it is staked to secure the network, and it is required to register validators and spin up new chains. Fees paid in AVAX are burned rather than handed to whoever produced the block.
The base network is split into three chains with separate jobs: one for simple asset transfers, one that is Ethereum-compatible and runs <a href="/glossary/smart-contract/">smart contracts</a>, and one that coordinates validators and the creation of new networks. Consensus works by repeated random sampling — each validator keeps asking small random groups of peers what they think, and opinion tips quickly towards agreement instead of being tallied up by a single leader.
In day-to-day use, almost everything a newcomer touches sits on the Ethereum-compatible chain: lending markets, decentralised exchanges, stablecoins, NFTs and the familiar wallets and developer tools people already use on <a href="/coins/ethereum/">Ethereum</a>. The custom-chain side is aimed at teams that want their own validator set, their own gas token or their own compliance rules; games, enterprise pilots and institutional experiments have been the recurring examples.
The trade-offs are real. A custom chain does not inherit the main network's security — it has to recruit and pay its own validators, and a small validator set is a weak one. Spreading users across chains splits liquidity too, and moving value between separate networks means trusting a <a href="/glossary/bridge/">bridge</a>, historically among the most exploited pieces of crypto infrastructure. The three-chain layout also confuses beginners, who regularly send assets to the wrong one.

Avalanche FAQ
What is a subnet, in plain terms?
It is an independent network that reuses Avalanche's software and can borrow validators from the wider community, while setting its own rules — which token pays gas, who may validate, and whether access is permissioned. Think of it as renting the building plans rather than the building. The important consequence is that it stands on its own security, not the main network's, unless it explicitly arranges otherwise.
Which chain should I send AVAX to?
This trips people up constantly. AVAX exists on more than one of Avalanche's built-in chains, and most applications and exchanges expect the Ethereum-compatible one. Sending to the wrong chain usually means a recovery process rather than a clean loss, but not always. Check which chain the receiving address belongs to before you send, and test with a small amount first.
Can I use my existing Ethereum wallet and tools?
On Avalanche's Ethereum-compatible chain, largely yes. Contracts written for Ethereum can be deployed with little or no change, and standard browser wallets connect by adding the network. Addresses look identical to Ethereum addresses, which is convenient but also a hazard — an identical-looking address on a different network is a different destination, so always confirm you are on the intended chain.
What gives AVAX its demand?
It is required to pay fees on the network, to stake as a validator or delegator, and to create new chains and register validators. Fees are burned, which removes tokens from circulation as the network is used. None of that guarantees anything about price — demand for the token ultimately follows demand for the network, and that is not something anyone can promise.
How does staking AVAX work?
You either run a validator, which requires a minimum stake and reliable uptime, or delegate to someone else's validator from a wallet without giving up custody. Both lock your tokens for a chosen period, and you cannot withdraw early, so treat the duration as a real commitment. Rewards depend on how much you stake, for how long, and the validator's uptime and commission.
What are the main risks to understand here?
Beyond ordinary price volatility: custom chains secure themselves, so a small one may be far easier to attack than the main network; bridging assets between chains introduces contract and operator risk; and competition between Ethereum-compatible chains is intense, which affects where developers and liquidity end up. Reading <a href="/learn/defi-basics-and-risks/">DeFi basics and risks</a> before using applications here is time well spent.
