The main thing is being able to help people who are in need of medical care, but you don’t need to be a doctor to handle that. There are tons of positions in the ICU, like respiratory therapists or intensivists, so you should apply there if you want to work in the ICU.
ICU nurses handle the emergency care of patients who are seriously ill, but they don’t work so long and so hard. They just give basic life-sustaining treatment to patients until they recover or die. They don’t perform surgery. They are called “primary care” nurses and are the ones that take care of all the sickest people in hospitals.

I’m going to take a guess that a nurse who is one of the best at what she does has probably not had to work in a hospital where there are a lot of dying patients. Because, you know, that would suck.
In fact, ICU nurses often have to work in very stressful environments where patients are in the midst of a major emergency. This makes them all the more anxious, and they are just as worried about keeping their patients alive as they are about keeping themselves alive.
ICU is one of the few places where the level of stress can be low enough that doctors can give patients an injection, or cut off a blood vessel, or something. This is where ICU nurses usually work, and it’s where the majority of hospitals in the U.S. are.
ICU is a place where the patients are in a very high state of stress, and therefore any chance of a problem is very high. ICU nurses are responsible for taking care of the patients, preventing them from falling, and giving them the best possible care. ICU is a place where they are most likely to have to work with patients who are very sick, and who are constantly being transferred to other hospitals.
So, if you want to work with these types of patients, you should probably get a different type of job. And if you’re a nurse, chances are that you’ll need a license as well.
