You can’t get a job at a hotel, and you don’t get a cut of the room at a restaurant unless you’ve been there and actually stayed there. Not to mention, the employers in the travel industry are generally more concerned with the “success” of their clients than they are about the quality of their employees.
I dont know why I was surprised to learn that the only place to apply for jobs in NYC is the travel industry. I think the travel industry is an interesting place, but I dont think I would apply. I imagine it would be a long, drawn-out process to get someone to give you a job for several months.
Here’s another aspect about New York. I was told by one of the employers I interviewed for that, in order to land a job, I needed to speak with the Mayor, the CEO of the employer, and the person who handles all the legal issues involved in hiring. It’s a weird thing to be told but it happens all the time.
New York is a big city, but I also think that you would need to have some sort of connection to the city to gain access to it, especially if you were hired for a position with a major corporation. The truth is that many people just want to work here because it makes them feel good to be working with people who are like-minded and like-looking. The New York economy is growing like crazy and is a fascinating place to work.
The people who want to work in New York are the very people who want to be here. I know when I was in New York and had to have an interview I would keep my eyes and ears open for the people who wanted jobs and the people who wanted to work in New York. Often it was the people who wanted to work here who weren’t just unemployed. They had jobs, they had families, they had a life.
