To say that the medical school is a success would be an understatement. The school has over 450 undergraduates, 40 grad students, and several hundred post-docs and residents. The school has a long tradition of serving as a model for other medical schools across the nation. It is the only true physician-led institution in the state of Minnesota, and the first school of its kind in the nation.
At Nashoba Valley Hospital, the doctors are the patients. And the patients are the doctors. The patients have a lot of autonomy, but the doctors have to give them a lot of autonomy to do their jobs. So when a patient is sick, the doctors can make a lot of decisions about what drugs or treatments to order.
The patients can, and do, go places that the doctors can’t go. This is a model other hospitals have tried to follow, with mixed success. When the doctors need to see the patients, they need a room and a bed. But when the patients need to see the doctors, they need a building and a parking lot. Nashoba Valley Hospital has a parking lot for doctors and a parking lot for patients. On one hand, it’s incredibly convenient.
This model might prove problematic if there’s a hospital in a remote area that no one can get to. The new hospital is on the top of the valley, so it can get patients to and from it. But the valley’s only been accessible for a few years, and there’s a lot of snow this year. The new hospital will have to be built to accommodate a lot more people.
Theres also a lot of snow to consider with the new hospital. The valley won’t be able to support a lot of new patients, and will need to be expanded to create a larger space. For some reason, it’s not clear how snow works, but it looks like the valley has an “open season” for snow to be cleared from the area.
