According to the AMA (American Medical Association) survey, the median salary for internist is $71,550. That’s significantly more than other fields in medicine, but the average salary for internists is still low compared to that of doctors and nurses.
The AMA survey is based on the responses of 1003 internists from the two largest US medical groups, the Group of Internal Medicine (GIM) and the American Medical Association (AMA). It’s a bit misleading though because the number of doctors in the survey (which includes both primary care providers and specialists) is probably a bit higher.
Internists are not the only ones having a tough time finding a nice, well-paying job. When I was a young internist, I was not allowed to do any overtime work. I was allowed to do all of my work at night and only once or twice during the day. I was given a pay scale which was much less than I had expected.
Sure, some doctors can work overtime for the sake of earning additional money, but that kind of overtime is not always necessary. If you’re a doctor and you are asked to work overtime, you should make sure that you really do have enough time to do so. Not only is it going to make you look like a whiny bitch, but it will also lead to the doctor being fired, which can be a scary thing.
This was the case with my internist. I had to make a special effort when I took on work as a doctor, because I didn’t want him thinking that I was a lazy little bitch. On the other hand, my psychiatrist was paid more for the hours I was in bed having my last treatment. I think this is an important distinction because I was also being paid for the time I spent doing other things, like watching TV and reading.

So what does all this mean? I’d expect that intern pay would be a fraction of what it is now. That might not be the case, but it would be a huge difference. That said, it does make me wonder if the pay in the future might be even higher.
You might think intern salaries are going up because the economy is improving but that’s not really the case. Most of the time intern salaries are more or less the same or even lower. So in the short term, they’re not going up. They’re just going down, and to some extent they will fall because it’s easier to do the work of an intern.
