We were really excited that our new home was being built in the city of Fort Madison and we wanted to do everything we could to make it as comfortable as possible. To make the transition as seamless as possible we asked our architect to make sure that the house was built with proper fire safety in mind.
Our house is a small 1-bedroom studio, so when you look at the floor plans you can see that the main living area is a bit lower than typical for studios. We wanted to make sure that the fire safety features in the house were as high as we possibly could.
There are two different kinds of fire safety features. One is the automatic fire-detection sprinklers that are meant for larger buildings, like offices or hospitals. The other is a fire-resistant wall that’s meant to be used in residential homes. The key is knowing how to install these features correctly so that they work for you, not against you.

Fort Madison is a private, non-profit, non-military hospital. It is home to over 50,000 people, and the hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). As such, it is able to provide in-house medical care.
As of November 30th, the hospital was able to treat over 100 emergency calls, and had had less than one fire in the last three years. That doesn’t mean there aren’t fire alarms or fire extinguishers at the hospital. There are. But they’re used mostly for fire suppression.
