Average gastroenterologists in the US earn the highest salary in the country, with an average of $135,800 a year. It’s more than double the national median salary of $63,900 a year.
What’s the problem with that? Well, when I say “average” doctor salary, I mean “average” salary across all gastroenterologists. There are those who make a great living, and there are those who make a decent living. The average gastroenterologist is at the intersection of the two.
I know and you know, the average doctor isn’t going to be doing that. But hey, maybe this is why gastroenterologists are so common. In my opinion, gastroenterologists have become the most sought after, and lucrative, specialty in the country. Why? Because gastroenterologists make the most money.
Well, perhaps. But the median gastroenterologist salary hasn’t changed much over the years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, gastroenterologists make $106,000. That is, it’s more than the average police officer and firefighters, but less than the median nurse, fire fighter, and police officer. Although, we will never know for sure, because gastroenterologists aren’t listed as a profession anywhere in the US Census.
Maybe that’s because gastroenterologists arent really a profession in the first place. They arent a group of doctors, nurses, or even a specific category (as far as I’m aware) of medical professionals, so they dont really qualify as a profession. They don’t have any legal standing in the US.
The other thing that makes gastroenterologists not a profession is that gastroenterologists arent listed as the second or third most common occupation in the US. I think they are, however, the third most common occupation. The other two being surgeons and pharmacists.
It is generally considered that gastroenterologists are the most expensive doctors to work for, and they are, in fact, the most expensive doctors in the US. They work at a rate of $174,000 per year, so at that rate they would pay out $18.1 million for the entire nation. To put this into perspective, the average annual salary of a surgeon in the US is about $113,000.
The average salary for a gastroenterologist is a bit lower, but the average salary for a gastroenterologist in the United States is a bit higher than the average salary for a surgeon. The difference is that a gastroenterologist has to spend time on the phone and in the office, while a surgeon simply has to be there 24 hours a day.
