For a moment, I thought I would have to be an expert on European currency to know how much I could save by going with my local bank. I am not a currency expert, but I can say that I can find at least $36 per euro. This is a great savings.
I have saved enough for a couple months to cover a couple months of rent, food, and entertainment. I can also get a few months of groceries in the same amount of money I would pay in a year with a local bank.
To take off from the fact that I know and trust you about not paying into the local bank, I have started a new account on my local bank. The account will keep me up until March.

There’s more! The interest rate on the new account is low enough that I can get a small amount of interest on it. I’m also set up with a debit card for an ATM. It’s a very small amount of money, but I can withdraw it easily. This is another reason I will be paying into the new account, as well.

I would recommend going with the debit card for an ATM, because it offers a security feature that I would like. The security feature is that you can enter a unique ID code to verify that you are who you say you are. That way you can use the card without having to type in your bank account number or your SSN. The downside is it can only be used once per month.
All in all, I would recommend doing a card scan of your existing account to see if you are a proper card reader and are currently in the process of paying. It is really easy and inexpensive to do.
I have to say that I have never used a card scanner before, but as a person with a limited amount of money I would pay a visit to a card scanner and just sit around and wait for the process to finish. It is a hassle but it is totally worth it. As long as you know what you are doing before you go, it can be such a pain that you’d be better off just using cash.
