Run the same checklist every time: what it claims to do, who builds it, how the supply is scheduled, whether anyone genuinely uses it, and how easily it trades.

Start with the claim, not the chart

Before you look at a price, write down in one plain sentence what the project says it does. Not the slogan, the actual function. Something like “it lets people borrow against collateral without a bank”. If you cannot write that sentence after ten minutes on the project’s own website, that is already useful information.

Then ask the awkward follow-up: why does this need a blockchain, and why does it need its own token? Plenty of good ideas need neither. A project that can only answer with vague talk about decentralisation is often selling the token rather than the tool.

Finally, find the closest competitors. Almost nothing here is truly unique, and knowing who else does the same job tells you whether this one is ahead, behind, or a rebranded copy.

Work out who is actually building it

Teams matter more in young projects than in established ones, because a young project is mostly a set of promises. Look for real names, work histories and public output. Anonymity is not automatic proof of bad intent, but it removes your only recourse if things go wrong, and that should change how much you are willing to risk.

Public code repositories are readable even if you cannot read code. You can see whether commits are recent or stopped long ago, whether more than one person contributes, and whether reported problems get answered. A repository with a single contributor and a quiet history rarely matches an ambitious roadmap.

Funding is worth the same attention. Backers who entered at a far lower price have a very different set of incentives from yours.

Read the supply schedule before anything else

Supply is where beginners lose money without the price ever appearing to collapse. A token can trade sideways for months while the number of coins in circulation doubles, and your share of the network quietly halves.

Find four things: total supply, circulating supply, the rate at which new tokens are issued, and the calendar for locked tokens becoming free to sell. If a project makes those hard to find, treat the question as answered. Our guide to reading tokenomics without getting fooled walks through how those tables usually hide their worst news.

Allocation matters as much as the totals. When a large share sits with the team, the treasury and early investors, a good deal of future selling is already scheduled into the design.

Separate real usage from marketing

Marketing measures announcements. Usage measures behaviour. The two often point in opposite directions, and only one of them survives a quiet market.

Look for activity that would be inconvenient to fake: fees paid by people who are not being rewarded for paying them, repeat users rather than one-off wallets, integrations other teams chose to maintain. Incentive programmes manufacture activity for as long as the rewards last, so ask what would remain if they stopped tomorrow.

Partnership announcements deserve particular scepticism. A logo on a slide is not a contract, and a pilot is not a product. If the partner has never mentioned the project on their own channels, you are reading a press release, not a business.

Check liquidity before you assume you can leave

Getting into a small token is easy. Getting out is the part people forget to check. Liquidity is the depth of real orders sitting near the current price, and it determines whether a modest sale moves the market against you.

Look at where it trades, how many venues carry it, and how much of the reported volume sits on one thin market. A token that only trades meaningfully in a single pool is fragile by construction. Our explainer on market cap, volume and liquidity covers why headline volume can flatter a very shallow market.

Red flags that end the research early

Some findings are not warnings so much as exits. When you hit one, the honest response is to stop rather than look for reasons it might be fine.

Guaranteed or “fixed” returns, in any wording. Nothing in crypto can promise that.

Pressure to act quickly: countdowns, closing allocations, limited whitelists.

No public code, no documentation, and a roadmap made entirely of marketing milestones.

Supply, allocation or unlock information that is missing, contradictory or buried.

Any request for your seed phrase or private keys, or a “support” account offering to help you connect a wallet. Our guide to spotting crypto scams covers how these approaches usually arrive.

Key takeaways

Use the same checklist for every project. Consistency is what stops enthusiasm doing your thinking for you.

Supply schedules and unlock calendars explain more disappointing outcomes than price charts do.

Usage that survives without incentives is worth far more than any announcement.

Research answers “do I understand this”, never “should I buy it”. Those are separate decisions, and the second is yours alone. For the wider dangers, start with the risks every beginner should understand.

Educational content, not financial advice. Crypto is volatile and high-risk; never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone. Always do your own research.

A repeatable research routine for any new altcoin.
