1983 one pound coin

Weighing one pound is a relatively new thing. In 1983, a single coin was worth $0.25. Today, the United States Mint will issue the one pound coin at a cost of $1 in 2028.

This coin has an interesting history. It was the first coin issued in the United States and one pound was the smallest coin ever issued. From its announcement in 1983, the coin made a lot of news. First, the idea of a one pound coin was considered so bizarre that it was suggested that it might be a hoax. People believed that if a one pound coin was issued, that it would be the world’s first one pound coin.

So, there you go. One pound coin.

I was surprised to see how many people were willing to admit that they didn’t know what a pound was. I know that in general the coin is a lot bigger than 1/20 of an ounce, but for some reason I never got the point that most people were trying to make.
