It’s worth keeping in mind that the exchange rate between American dollars and New Zealand dollars changed after the 2008 financial crisis. Before then, the exchange rate was 1400 nzd to usd. Before that, it was around 1300 nzd to usd. Since the collapse of the U.S.
Our exchange rate has fallen significantly. Now it’s around 600 nzd to usd, which still is a decent exchange rate, but it’s certainly not what it was when the U.S. was still very much in the top half of the world when we were trading at over $1,000 nzd to usd.
The reason for the price change is not entirely clear. It is possible that the U.S. is no longer the top trading partner, or maybe that we are no longer the top trading partner. Regardless of the reason, the exchange rate has fallen in value for New Zealand dollars and American dollars.
